A photo of one of Phil's fish caught in may 2012. |
“There are days when you arrive at Curley’s and
really fancy your chances of catching. Today was definitely not one of
them! When I arrived at 9:30, it was flat calm, the sun was starting to
show through and only the odd fish showing in the distance.
Pessimistically assuming that I could be drawing a blank, I opted for
Pontoon 2 on the basis that it was not far to get back to my car when I
have had enough!.
After
about half an hour of trying various lures / depths / speeds and having
not had a touch, my pessimism seemed to be justified. However a light
westerly breeze sprang up (basically straight into my face). I was
contemplating moving onto one of the roadside pontoons when a couple of
fish rose virtually under my feet. I saw a few black midges and decided
to try a small buzzer. After a few casts, I caught a ‘stockie’ probably
less than 5 yards out. I then had a series of very light tweaks on the
same fly; having caught 3 roach in 5 casts, I soon knew what these were,
so time to change. Having seen a few more fish rising as though taking
emerging buzzers, I tied on a size 14 black and red klinkhammer. This
proved to be a masterstroke! I caught 7 fish over the next 3 hours and
missed at least as many again. The best fish was a blue of nearly 3
pounds. After about 2:00, it all went quiet, so I decided to call it a
day. In fact it had been my best ever day, I have never caught 8 fish in
one session before. What made it even better was that the catch was on a
day that initially I had not fancied at all. It just shows how
deceptive initial appearances can be and how important it is to be aware
of how changes in conditions can really bring about a change of luck!”
Any Angler's can send me a report/mini-article if they choose, day ticket anglers & member alike, just simply email me a short story (if possible a photo also).
