Friday 31st August

At last a good day weatherwise and according to the forecast only going to get better and more consistant.  It is this consistency that has made life so difficult for us fly fishers.
Once the temperature and barometer have settled a bit the fish will suddenly liven up become much more active and start to feed longer and harder.
So IF the forecast is anything like true we should be in for a good weekend with a deal of dry fly activity available.
Today has started off quietly but 3 fish to the net for member Jim McGinley already.
Floating lines long leaders, fishing the top 6 foot of water the right tactic and then react quickly to any feeding activity.

Thursday 30th August

Nice conditions here today, the suns out and a nice refreshing breeze is rolling in from the west. Creating a nice even ripple across the lake.

Anglers did well yesterday, with Member Phil Rees netting 6 and losing just as many to delicate takes to his daddy long legs imitation.

Early morning / late afternoon fishing better, with the classic evening rise often taking place beyond 6pm.

Top patterns
  • Daddy long legs, with either a olive or light yellow coloured body doing best.
  • Small Black foam bugs, cast under over hangs or allowed to drift about on the water.
Recent sightings of large orange legged bugs have been reported!
Other wise known as the "forest bug" Pentatoma rufipes, a large, heavy shielded bug easily to recognise for its spiky lateral projections and orange legs.
These are worth imitating as Ive seen a few landing on the surface around the edges of the reservoir, as they actually lay their eggs on bark of oaks and other trees around this time of year, and some falling into the water as they are in the process of doing so.

Although these "bugs" aren't as common as others, they can still provide a respectable food source for the occasional trout this time of year. Below is a photo!

Quite a few of sightings of these bugs have been reported! Their actually quite large around the size of a 1p coin.

Wednesday 29th August

Today's weather forecast has put a few anglers off. However its not as bad as predicted, a light rain present but virtually nil wind, a slight easterly.
A lot of fish showing near the surface early morning, with one angler hooking into a trout on his first cast!
The top patterns seems to be the daddy so far, with the majority of trout coming out to this pattern over the last week or so.

Today's Video Upload
The HD videos will resume from next week. Currently videos aren't in HD.

Floating line, long leader and a team of dries seem to be the order of the day!
Water proofs recommended, but according to the forecasters the weather will (fingers crossed) improved as we get closer to midday.

UPDATE:
The weather has started to brighten up [11am] and even clear skies on the horizon!
No rain for the last hour.

Member Evening Meet up amendments [Click here]

Not bad conditions today, the suns out the majority of the time, but it doesn't appear to be pushing the fish deeper. The majority of trout today have come out to dries, daddies, black hoppers and black foam Gnats.

A reasonable refreshing cool westerly, as the saying goes! "fish bite the best when the winds blowing from the west!"

Anglers having to work for their catches today, with the changeable conditions effecting the recent stocked fish's initial acclimatising stage. The best action will be from this evening onwards, when the weather cools and the sun dips behind the tree line. Evening fishing at Curley's currently the most productive time for anglers.

Today's Video Upload, footage taken from the enbankment closest to pontoon 2. [see map].

--Please be aware the video concerned may take a while to upload to its correct quality--

Today's Top patterns:
  • Black Gnat
  • Daddy
  • Small foam bug
  • Claret Hoppers
Update = Im currently working on the previous Members evening youtube video, hopefully i will upload this by the weekend. Includes some footage of Members Playing fish, photos of the BBQ taking place and more.

Bank Holiday Monday 27th August

There has been a alteration to the Members Evening, please click here for futher details.

Not bad conditions at Curleys considering the forecast is a little less than welcoming.
A reasonable wind present, easterly (towards the dam). [See map]
No rain as of yet, but plenty of fish within the lake due to a current stocking, the trout that have been stocked most recently haven't settled down yet, but when they do the sport will be brilliant. Cats whiskers at the ready! More than likely the fish will settle down today going on to Tuesday, with the weather changing continuously since stocking, the trout have taken a little longer to acclimatise.

Please open the video in a larger window to allow the HD to correctly work and show in more detail the current conditions.

Yesterday's top rod:
Mr Townsend with 5 trout on a 4hour ticket.

UPDATE:
The rain has stopped for the last hour [10:30am]
The wind has increased slightly, still remaining easterly.

Members Evening Session

A beautiful wild brownie caught by Geoff, fishing off pontoon 2 towards the east overhang. Caught to a olive goldhead lure. (23rd august).

Today's conditions are ideal, a very slight easterly, and the rain over night cooling the surface layer. Quite a few fish showing near the surface, but i would imagine they will be sat around 5-6ft down currently, unless a large hatch commences, bringing them a little closer to the surface.
A few anglers up bright and early, all on different methods currently.

Yesterday we had a excellent day with the majority of anglers catching their bag limit and plenty of fish came out to various patterns. Top Rod (which wont be a suprise!) Young Oliver Avis! with 9 fish to dries!

Friday 24th Aug

Quite a few rods on today, most have caught with the top rod Oliver, having 7 fish all to dries.
Not easy fishing under the prevailing conditions the fish being ultra fussy, coming up to the fly and swirling away but it keeps you interested.
The newly stocked fish haven't kicked in yet and are still getting to grips with their new environment which means that all those fishing on Saturday, Sunday or Monday should benefit.
Let's hope the weather is kind

Thursday 23rd August / Stocking today*

Members Evening Session

We are stocking today with 150+ bows and blues. (pictures/video to follow soon).

Weather wise it isnt too bad this morning, light drizzle, but virtually nil wind, a very slight easterly.
Alot of fish showing just under the surface currently, with the rain cooling down the initial few layers of water, bringing the trout nearer to the surface.

Today's Video upload

Recent Top patterns:

Daddy long legs
Zonker booby
Black buzzer

Photo of the stocking taking place at 9:30am. A mixture of the standard stocking size and some bigger fish between 5-7lb, mostly bows with the odd blue and brown trout.

A short 20second clip showing a brief moment during the stocking earlier this morning. Music placed over the video as the background noise was a little loud.

A reasonable 15mph westerly wind currently present at Curleys. With plenty of fish hold on the tail end of the wind, towards pontoon 2 and 3. A decent wind at curleys really switches the fish on!, and plenty of fish holding against the current created by the wind. Stripping back brightly coloured blobs always does well in these current conditions.

Good looking day, bright but not too sunny, slight ripple on the water. Should be some good dry fly action today with the fish nearer to the surface than of late.
Have you tried fishing wets - semi-dry?? can be great fun. Just grease up your leader and leave the wets dangling on the droppers. Black Pennels and Bibios are great for this method.

Members Evening Session Review

I would like to start today's blog by saying thanks to all the members that came to the evening session, it was thoroughly enjoyable and the food was brilliant, thanks to member Steve Moffat, (our dedicated chef).
Lamb cutlets, pitta breads, Greek style sauce, burgers and a mixture of drinks, all went down very well indeed! So thanks again guys! and roll on next months members evening!

Everyone caught fish, and top rod was Mr Paul Knight, with 6 fish to his net. Most caught to a zonker booby.
Members and bailiffs included were out float-tubing, coarse fishing and fly fishing, so a excellent night.
Again a big big thank you to Members and Mr Steve Moffat for his hard work.
[Video compilation coming soon of the members evening.]

UPDATE:
Mr Jim McGinley has already netted 2 fish to a Goldhead Black Fritz.
Plenty of fish "head&tailing" on the surface, obvious feeding behaviour, so klinkhammers, buzzers will do well.
Anything to resemble a small roach/perch fry has been catching fish lately, due to the coarse species recently spawning.

Today's current conditions, 1pm.

As you can see from the video the easterly wind is reasonably strong, but not enough to be unpleasant.
The current hot spots seem to be the main basin towards pontoon 2 and 3.

Today's Top Rods:
Member Phil Reese with 5 trout, all to dries! daddies, klinks etc
Member Jim McGinley with 3 fish within a few hours, to cats whiskers.

The majority of the trout over the last few days have been caught to simple yet effective lures, black fritz and cats whiskers doing well.
Fished no more than 6ft down, when there's plenty of cloud cover. However if/when the sun returns the fish tend to head to slightly deeper water and a lot of fish tend to be caught between 10-16 feet. The water temperature is remaining quite even. However because of this, the fish has switched on to the feed at various depths.

Not a bad start to the morning, Young Oliver Avis currently top rod, which is no surprise!
A lot of fish showing across the lake, with some seriously aggressive swirls, possibly chasing small roach?
Which would make sense, as the fish caught up to now have been to small fish imitations, white/grey zonkers & minkies.

Slight easterly wind (towards the dam). Quite mild today, with a lot of non-biting midges and daddies making the odd appearance.

No rain as of yet and the cloud cover doesn't look too concerning currently.

As promised a Video of the current conditions to accompany the daily blogs, this will take place every day.

Early Morning upload.

Quick photo taken of one of Oliver's catch, unfortunately the dorsal fin is a little worse for wear, this usually happens when the trout are being netted and place into containers for transportation and cannot be avoided, the fins will take roughly 2weeks to heal over and become clean and sharp. Hence why the majority percentage of fish at curleys have spectacular fins, like shovels! as you will see from our daily blog photos.

In the future when we get our own keep net pens out in the middle of the lake, this wont happen, and we can rear them on ourselves and stock daily if needed.

Something a little different

Todays blogs
First  click here
Second click here

This blog isnt a update of how today has been fishing etc, click the above links for todays official blogs.

Quite a few Anglers over the last week have mentioned that some “big fish” waters have trout in them to very huge sizes, but fight very poor and to a certain extent are pointless?

Did you know!?

An interesting fact I have been told by fish farms (while studying) & knowledge gained while picking up my National Diploma in Fishery Management at Myerscough College. A bow of 15+lbs has roughly the same heart size as a trout of  2-4lb hence why the enormous trout at specialist big fish waters fight like many have described as a “sack of spuds!” With a tiny heart in comparison to their bodies it’s no wonder. A lot of these “monsters” fight poorly, unless their wild natural fish (which is near impossible in this country, for a wild brownie to grow to this size naturally).
The wild trout of the UK grow with their heart and not the other way round, i.e. forced to a ridiculous size by being fed high protein & high in fat trout pellets. A lot of the much larger fish lose condition very rapidly once the trout pellets stop becoming readily available, as very few trout waters across the UK have enough and a constant sustainable food source to support trout at the silly size of 20lb+.
Trout that are fed on pellets at a fish farm, almost become reliant on this as a food source, as soon as they are stocked they can start feeding after the initial shock to their systems.

However trout can take from 1day till a week (totally dependant on water temp & conditions at time of stocking), when they will naturally feed on whatever will be available within the water concerned. Losing their initial bulk slightly and then rebuilding and re-toning their bodies, a natural instinct kicks in “survival of the fittest mode” and they feed and experiment with different food types, i.e. goose feathers!?!?

Overstocked waters can have the opposite effect with stocking too dense per acre, waters various food sources can become stretched to the limit. Which causes fish to lose their size, become thin and loose weight around the stomach towards the anal fin, and generally loose their condition and become prone to infection and diseases.

Just think of a normal sized human being, and then a giant body builder, whose heart is the exact same size but has to work twice as hard to pump blood around the larger mass of their body. In the long run, damaging the heart muscle, causing all sorts of problems in later life. The exact same situation but in trout form, filling a trout full of protein and fatty packed pellets to give them bulk. Puts them at a major disadvantage to smaller fish, with a higher risk of health problems which could possibly weaken the immune system, causing parasites and fungal infections etc to be a more likely problem for the trout concerned.

The only exception to this heart growth, mitochondrial protein synthesis in rainbow trout is when the heart is enhanced in sexually mature males. However virtually all trout now stocked into trout waters are triploids (sexless).

(Protein Synthesis also plays a large part in the text mentioned above, water temp at time of growth etc.)

Just thought I would create a blog on this as a lot of anglers have asked and reported of such events.

Hope this information was useful, and helps those that asked the question/s.

Tight lines,
Nathan

Today's First photo!

Click here for todays earlier blog

Although i strive to get as many photos of trout caught as possible it can sometimes be difficult, with anglers on catch and release tickets. Only trout killed will have their photo taken, as this minimises the time the live fish will spend out of the water, e.g 20secs while posing for a photo. This time lost can have detrimental effects on the trouts well being. So please dont take photos of live trout, concentrate on getting them back safe and sound asap.

However one member has kept one for the BBQ!, so heres a quick photo.

Caught at 8:45am, By one of our Annual Members, Mr Steve Moffat. This 2 1/2lb bow took a black fritz fished deep and stripped back. More importantly this trout took steve's fly on the "Hang". Hanging your flies at the end of the retrieve can be deadly, not doing the hang will result in a lot of fish lost.

Saturday Morning

Another beautiful day here at Curley's, the suns out and a slight south easterly wind across the lake.
Depth is the key with the sun being out, find the right depth and you will find the fish as Young Oliver Avis proved on Friday, with 18 fish to his net by 4pm. Mainly to lures, and specifically a yellow and black booby.

One of yesterday's captures, a small yet beautifully fully finned bow.

Quite a few anglers out bright and early, before the heat of the sun kicks in, although it is surprisingly cool this morning, a chilling easterly wind.

Plenty of fish showing near the surface, with the odd larger trout being sighted! Member Steve Moffat hooked into a monster yesterday as it screamed line off his reel out towards the centre of the lake, before snapping his leader clean. The one that got away!

Morning rise!  Currently taking place, it seems the majority of the fish are now feeding within the top foot of water, alot of trout visible no more than 3ft down. Member Ian Aspinall currently having take after take, to dries, daddies, klinks and black hoppers.

Struggling to hook into takes to the dries? =>  Allow the fish to turn with the fly in its mouth before you strike otherwise you will be literally pulling the fly out of the trouts mouth, try striking after counting to 1...2...3...4 etc. Strike at different angles, if possible the opposite angle to which the fish is going, to ensure a positive hook up.

Excellent conditions overcast, with the odd appearence from the sun. Absolutely no wind, which is a rare sight at Curley's. Fish rising all over the lake!

The water has now returned back to its normal clarity, after last months heavy down pours towards early august. Fish visible just under the surface, cruising waiting for a well presented daddy!

Top rod yesterday, Oliver Avis with 17 trout, to various patterns, when the sun came out yesterday he wisely switched to a sinking line and was fishing around 16ft when he landed his last few to take his catch to a well deserved 17 trout overall, with some nice blue trout pushing 4lbs amoungst his bag.

UPDATE

Tuesday 7th August

A mixed day today weather wise, down pours and strong winds, with it now sunny and remaining breezy, however the wind has dropped significantly within the last 30minutes, to around 12+mph, Westerly.
Top Angler today so far, Young Oliver Avis the fly fishing ace! With 7 fish to his net.
Mr Allington landing 4 bows and one blue to a Green tadpole.

Another Short blog review kindly emailed to me by Oliver Avis, regarding his most recent visit.

I arrived at Curley's and was greeted with a gentle breeze and patchy clouds sometimes covering the bright sun. I set up a leader of over 20ft of 8lb g3 sightfree fluorocarbon with a Cats whisker on the point followed by a cormorant on the middle and a midget gem on the top dropper. My first line of choice was a fast intermediate. I made around five casts before the sun came out obviously putting the fish down. I prefer not to dwell on decisions and switched to a fast sink line straight away. I cast out and slowly figure of eight my flies back this is met with solid resistance and I'm into my first fish on my first cast with the fast sink the fish took a cats whisker. What a change a line makes! I make several more casts before I'm into my second fish of the day a solid rainbow of roughly 3lbs on the midget gem this time again to the figure of eight retrieve. With this fish I felt a tug on the line once I felt this I increased the speed of my retrieve and the line went solid. I fish away chopping and changing retrieves but to no avail. I move up to the dam wall about 6 pegs from the roadside. I see a fish swirl and my flies are cast immediately towards it, two long pulls and I see the wake of a fish chasing after my fly it follows all the way in and as I hang my flies my leader twitches and I strike firmly into a solid bow. This time on the cormorant on the middle dropper proving all my flies work. The HANG is extremely important I see many anglers become frustrated as fish swirl at there flies as they lift off to recast and completely ignore the hang. By hanging your flies you increase your catch rate and convert follows into takes. The sun shines brightly on a flat calm curleys now and a switch to nymphs on a long leader and a midge tip line. I move to the roadside pontoons. I cast my nymphs out and give two long pulls to straighten everything before I commence my slow figure of eight retrieve with nymphing you want to retrieve as little or as slow as possible just so you eliminate slack line to improve take detection. It's not long before I have the rod almost wrenched from my hand as my line shoots away towards the centre of the lake. After several storming runs a curleys resident bow is in the net of about 2 1/2 pounds. This fish took a flashback diawl bach on the top dropper. I continue to fish this method and as I hang my flies a fish charges from the depths and nails my flashback diawl Bach on the top dropper unfortunately I lose this fish but that's fishing. No more than ten minutes later and I have another fish in the net this time on a black buzzer. I move up a couple of pontoons towards the dam and see fish rising immediately I cast to a rising fish and give two pulls and the line tightens I land the fish and it appears to have taken a cruncher on the dropper. I soon change to the trusty fast sink and the same cast as before, a midget gem, cormorant and cats whisker. The heavens open and all other anglers run of the pontoons to shelter under the trees I count my flies down to 20 seconds and commence my "fta" retrieve "fool them about" this retrieve involves figure of eight slow pulls fast pulls etc. To provoke a take I figure of eight them two fast pulls and I'm into a fish it heads for deep water and feels absolutely solid. After a very intense fight in the pouring rain the fish lays in my net. A solid resident on the cats whisker. I move to the boat dock pontoon as the sun comes out I cast out figure of eight back and the line locks up this fish also heads for deeper water and stays deep always a sign you've got something special. The fish stays strong but I eventually get him to the net a perfect resident of around 3 1/2 pounds on the cats whisker. I continue to fish and get a double hook up on perch one on a blob and one on a cruncher! I switched to dries for the last 10 mins and miss two fish before the thunder starts and ends my days fishing.

Monday 6th August

Today's conditions aren't too bad, a reasonable westerly wind around 12mph (towards pontoon 2).
The forecasters got it wrong it seems, according to the forecast we should be expecting clear skies and sunny weather, however currently its a complete different scene at Curley's. Overcast, with the odd down pour.

A few fish showing on the surface, in and around "pike shallows", with the wind carrying the majority of the trout's diet towards the damn wall with the under current.
(click here to see water map).

Today's Conditions.

 The top 3 killing patterns
  • As always! Cats Whiskers!
  • Black & green buzzers
  • Goldhead Tadpoles
If the fish are feeding or near to the surface, and you cant quite pin-point what their feeding on, try popping a "Booby" across the surface, more successful teamed with a cruncher/dwial bach and a blob on the top dropper.
The disturbance the Booby creates when popped across the surface brings the trout in, and they will more than likely take a more imitative pattern near or trailing behind the booby, if fished "duo" or "newzealand" style.

Our Coarse Lake.

Our coarse lake is also fishing well currently with lots of roach and nice sized perch coming out to maggots, and worms. The very allusive and intelligent common carp, named "Bob" is still at large and only ever been caught to a fly! He is around 5lb and great fun on light coarse or even fly tackle!
Some nice sized roach also making an appearance and currently all fish within the Small Coarse Lake are very obliging.

Thursday 2nd August

Quick reminder of this upcoming members evening    [Click here]

Yesterday evening...

All anglers did well last night, with around 18 fish caught between 4/5 anglers. Within a couple of hours.
The fish were on the feed for the majority of the day and really switched on towards late evening.
Anything from cats whisker boobies, orange blobs to klinkhammers caught. Fished no more than 2 feet down, various coloured buzzers also landing a few.

Today..

Excellent weather wise, the sun making the odd appearence but mainly overcast. Virtually nil wind currently, no more than 3-4mph easterly breeze.

The water clarity has returned to normal after the recent weeks of rain.
Perfect day for a Floating line, long leader! and a team of buzzers!

A excellent set up for Curley's, two buzzers and a dwial bach to give the trout a option of something a little different. Fished static with a extremely slow "Figure-of-eight" to purely keep in touch with the flies. A long slow pull in the middle of the retrieve will give the flies a slow climb to the surface, this is when alot of trout take. One of the most important thing to do (which alot of anglers dont do!) is hang the flies as you lift off into your cast. Basically hang the rod at a 90degree angle to the water for 10-20secs before lifting off into your overhead cast.

The above is just a rough idea, as ive had a few emails regarding this so i thought i would touch on the basics so anglers new to this, can try it out.

Tight lines,
Nathan
