The wind due to subside s little as the weekend nears and almost no wind at all over Sat and Sun, so prospects looking good.

Wednesday 30th Jan

Very windy day today, hasn't put some avid fly fishers off getting their fishing fix today.
In spite of the conditions fish are still being caught regularly anything orange being the number one colour. Most effective method is fishing different depths under an indicator.

One of the many advantages of Curley's is that you can get out of the bad weather intermittently by visiting the new cafe for hot drinks and food at anytime.

Tuesday 29 January 2013

New permit prices and options

We have reviewed all of our permit options in comparison to other North West Commercial fisheries and made alterations which come into effect from 1st Feb 2013.
We can now offer a 8, 6, 4, and 2 hour permits with fish or sporting.
We have also re-introduced an over 65 year old ticket for 5 hours with 1 fish and added an adult and child option as well.
You also have the flexibility of adding extra hours or even extra fish (must be booked at time of ticket purchase)

We now feel that we have a comprehensive range of options to match any fishery whilst still remaining very price competitive.
We will of course still continue to offer the very best conditioned fish that are available

See chart on the right or our website for details

Monday 28 January 2013

Members only offer
Buy any 10 lures for only £4.50

Tackle offer
Tube of angling super glue, good for any application, braided loops, fly tying, only £1.00 rrp £4.99

Fishing report on the day so far:
top rod up to now is Steve from Bolton, who has been fishing for about 45mins and had had 5 fish to the net. All the fish were no more than 8 ft deep and were caught on a floating line and a variety of flies, Dawl Bachs and nymphs amongst them

Awful weather

Ok so who wants to go fishing in this awful weather?
The lake is looking a bit sorry for itself, bits of ice here and there, looks like its going to snow or rain or both, who knows?
Sinking line methods will catch fish for those who are brave enough or have the right gear to wear!

As soon as the improves and we get  back to some serious fishing I will be introducing some offers and incentives so check back regularly!

Sunday 27 January 2013

Sunday update

Sorry folks but very difficult conditions today now that I have seen the lake. The only fishing available at the moment  is from the dam wall  but the slush will hopefully break up as the day progresses. There is a gusty Westerly which make casting a little tricky.
Underfoot it is sloppy with lots of melting snow about.
Don't be fooled by conditions where you live, there is still lots of snow about here!
Honesty is the best policy!

Sunday 27th

Even a broken clock is right twice a day and so it seems the forecasters get it right on rare occasions, last night being one of them. Wet and a bit windy but meant to be easing off and maybe even the sun poking through, doesn't look like that now but you never know?
For all those of you with cabin fever at least you can be rewarded with the permit and fly offers on today. I'll be around all day doing a lesson, so see you then.

Saturday 26 January 2013

Bleak Saturday

Sorry folks, not a chance of fishing today, even if you could get here! Big snow drifts and the lake has a very thin covering of ice which is quickly melting.
IF THE EXPECTED thaw happens as forecasted then there maybe more of a chance tomorrow but well have to wait and see.

Friday 25th

Will just copy this email in as I got it, completely unedited.

Mike,
It was a pity (for others) that I was the sole angler on Thursday afternoon. When I arrived at about1:30, the water was flat calm with no sign of fish showing, so I followed your guidance that the fish were likely to be deep and used a sinking line. I first tried Pontoon 2 for an hour, with no luck so tried Pontoon 5 instead. I quickly caught 2 nice bows of about 2lb each on a cats whisker that I ‘twitched’ along the bottom (I also caught a few leaves which  told me where I was fishing). I caught them casting parallel to the bank, so they were not far out.  I had to take one of them because it had completely wolfed the lure and was bleeding from the gills. I know that you suggested white lures, but having caught a couple on white,  I decided to experiment with other colours. In the end I caught a total of 7 bows; I caught on black, orange and olive, so colour did not seem to matter. What did matter was whether I was hard on the bottom and whether I did little (2”) twitches. Nothing else seemed to work. As a final treat, I hooked into an obviously larger fish on an orange dancer. After a protracted fight, I finally netted a pike of about 5lb, fortunately hooked right in the ‘scissors’. I finished at about 16:00 because the rings on my rod were icing up. But all in all, a very productive and fun day.

Thursday 24th Jan

This could possibly the best day of the week, according to the forecasts anyway! Not too cold at present, no frost or snow overnight, fish ready and waiting!
Top rod yesterday was Brian from Wigan who was using a Di3 with boobies and he thinks he caught about 5 but I was watching him on and off and I'm sure it was more than that! He enjoyed himself anyway!

Wednesday 23 January 2013

Wednesday 23rd

No more snow for now at least and the pontoons cleared and salted ready for action!
Come on down! Bit of a grey day but not windy or as cold as the last couple of days.

Tuesday 22 January 2013

Tues 22nd

Pretty good day in comparison to recent ones. I can actually see a bit of blue sky and some yellow thing trying to poke its way through!
There is a lot of snow on the ground so you will need good footwear!

I'll be mostly trying to clear snow today!

Monday 21 January 2013

monday update

snow, so what - it just means they come out already frozen!!! but you do need to clean them first!

Monday 21st Jan

Update
Snowing again and no sign of it stopping in a hurry!
Still no signs of ice on the fly lake. The fish will still be here ready and waiting for when the weather improves.

Nathan Jones who has been a bailiff here for a little while has moved onto pastures new, a job with his Uncle where prospects and certainly money is better😛 I'd just like to thank Nathan for all his hard work and dedication he was an asset to the fishery.  He will still be back doing odd bits of work and fishing I'm sure in the future and I wish him well in his new career.

So anyone know if or are interested in a part time bailiffs job from Springtime onwards. Apply within! Need to have knowledge of fishing, especially fly fishing, be fully computer literate and GSH!

Sunday 20 January 2013

Sunday update

Well, well, well, this fishery and these fish continue to surprise even me and I'd thought I had seen it all!!!
Only 2 fly fishers braving the cold today but one, Andy Gaskell caught 9 fish to white dancer and cats whisker using a sinking line. A really good result given the weather conditions but Andy's mate Martin only caught 2 but with a floater 9ft leader and a Cats -- amazing really. By all normal standards Martin should not have been in with a chance of catching with those tactics but Curley's fish obliged again!

He who dares Rodders!! So the moral of the story is no matter what the conditions come to Curley's to catch fish! So it seems!

Sunday 20th

The freeze continues but so does the fishing. As yet we have not had to close the fishery but would advise extreme care when walking around the paths etc whilst the snow and ice persist.

The fish have gone deeper, no suprise there! Still the two options are sinking lines with a very slow retrieve or fishing around 10ft deep static under an indicator or bung.

There is still no ice on the lake and the air temp at present is a balmy 0c

More later after I've spoken to all those who are fishing........

Friday 18 January 2013

Friday 18th

Ok so the weather forecasters aren't absolutely and completely useless!☺
Yes the snow has fallen and still is falling putting pay to any ideas of fishing for today at least.

Yesterday ended a good one for those that braved the cold, especially Nick Halstead who lost count at somewhere around 30 fish!!! So it should make good reading in next months Trout Fisherman Mag.
Will update on conditions tomorrow but.......??

Thursday 17 January 2013

Thursday update

Everybody has caught today, top rod is Nick Halstead on well over double figures, then one of our members Phil Rees on 5 fish followed by all the others on between 5 and 2 fish.

Very strange day in terms of tactics, some caught fish deep i.e. 10 ft-ish and other no more than 3 ft, amazing really!

I am not going to inform you how Nick caught his fish you'll have to buy next months Trout Fisherman to learn that!!

Chilly Thursday 17th

A chilly start and no doubt will be at the end of the day as well. Air temp currently at minus 1c.
Water temps at plus 3c. Surprising how relatively warm the water is for the conditions but does explain why the fish are as active as they are. Let's hope it continues through the forecasted spell of colder air this weekend.

Still hasn't put the fish off they are being tempted regularly to take the fly.

Nick Halstead, England International, is here to do a feature for Trout Fisherman and although only "warmimg up" before the photographer is here, he has had 5 fish to the net.

Others fishing have had 2's and 3's so a promising day ahead.

So if you get down here in the next couple of hours you may get your photo in the mag😄

Wednesday 16 January 2013

Update for Wednesday 16th

Not a sign of ice anywhere on the fly lake - keep your fingers crossed as it is going to be a cold one tonight.

Still fishing very well - top rod today Steve Moffatt with 5 fish in an hour all  to an indicator set-up and about 9 ft deep.

Prospects for tomorrow very similar but snow forecast for Friday - but when do they get anything right?

Tuesday 15 January 2013

Tuesday conditions are good

Good start to the day, the conditions for fishing are very good although a little slippy under foot.
New member John Burrows off to a brisk start with 2 fish to the net after only 30 mins. One these was a particularly good fish running to about 4 lbs.

Surprisingly the fish are still not too deep. With no signs of ice on the fly lake fish are cruising between 4 and 8 foot deep.

Floating line under a bung or indicator a very successful methods with any coloured fly.

A Photo kindly emailed to me by Member Paul Harris, i was reliably informed it put up an excellent account for itself, peeling line off the reel!
Beautiful rainbow around 41/2lbs taken to a yellow fritz...

Well done on your capture and as one of our newest Members, i welcome you to the Curleys Annual Membership!

A snow covered start...

On my Arrival at 8:15am this morning the entire fishery was covered in a inch of snow, this has now thawed out, but i did get a few nice photos to share with you all.

Few anglers out on the water including Member Jim McGinley who fished early morning for two hours and landed 5 fish to cats whiskers and yellow fritz. One of our newest members Mr Paul Harris secured himself two trout and one of a larger size, around 41/2lb taken again to a yellow fritz tin head.

Prospects are good for Tuesday with the snow full thawed, the small coarse lake is still partially frozen over but a good percentage of it is still fish-able. The large trout lake remaining totally ice free...
The trout still remaining with the top 10 feet, and floating lines the chosen weapon for the majority of anglers, although this will change as the cooler weather starts to set in towards February.

Quite a few photos being posted via facebook, from anglers, so here's the link to check those out.
Don't forget to add us as a friend for regular updates additional to the blog.

A view across the lake at nine this morning.

This has virtually all thawed out now, pegs have been cleared of snow first thing and because of this the frost will be minimal, the walkway/path to the first two pontoons have been completely cleared for ease of access...

Both of these cracking fish were caught by Mr Paul Harris, who after only a few months of fly fishing has already started to reap the rewards of this wonderful sport. What a beautiful full finned pair they are!

Mr Nick Halstead netted this stunning 5lb bow to a blob fished around 9ft beneath a indicator, this was one of many fish he landed during his visit to Curley's. Was excellent to see him on our banks, and we look forward to seeing him again shortly. On a personal note, Nick Halstead helped me gain my position in the EYFA (England Youth Fly fishing team) around 6-7 years ago, and it was a great pleasure to see him again after such along time!
Photo above was taken of Sam Firth, who has only recently started up fly fishing, and is well and truely hooked on the sport.
Fly fishing is a wonderful sport for kids and adults alike to get into, I'm sure we will be seeing more of Sam on the banks over the coming season! Well done!

A rather chilly sunday..

The temperature has dropped to minus one currently, however this suprisingly hasn't put the fish off the feed.
Completely the opposite, fish rising!, and alot of fish being caught first thing, with each angler now at 3-4 fish a piece.

Weather wise, there is nil wind, a complete flat calm first thing. Although this cold weather should in theory push the fish deeper, the fish are doing the opposite infact, they appear to be no deeper than 5-6ft.

The small lake has frozen over, so no fish available on there but the large trout lake is still 100% free of ice.

Good days fishing had by all today, and Mr Nick Halstead payed us a welcomed visit, landing 15+ fish on a 4hour ticket! Most taken to blobs fished under a indicator around 9ft. The majority of Anglers managing 4-5 fish on a 4 hour ticket, mostly to large lures fished within the top 10ft of water. The trout are still remaining close to the surface, the bigger resident fish hanging around 9-11ft.....

Top patterns yesterday and today so far....
  • Olive snake / black snake
  • Orange fritz
  • Black and green fritz
  • Orange/yellow blob
As the blogs gradually return to their normal pace, of one per day, the daily videos will return soon.

Top rod at 9am was Member Jim McGinley with 6 fish and still continuing to catch!

All anglers catching on various patterns but the top two patterns so far are...
  1. Olive snake
  2. Green & white fritz goldhead
Weather wise its very cold! so wrap up well, regular brews recommended!

Bring on the snow storm!

Another Excellent day at Curleys, plenty of fish caught and top rod, Member Jim McGinley landing 5 fish and losing 3, within a short 2 hour session! Good angling!

Had a visitor today, Mr Joshua Charnley from Wigan Warriors RL team. He managed just the one, however he has picked up the casting side of things very very quickly! After only two sessions, he can throw a reasonable cast out, with great turn over. Never seen anyone pick it up that quick!

Photos unfortunately i have left at the Fishery office, so i will get those uploaded on Saturday for all too see.

All the Anglers visiting us since our most recent stocking have all been very complementary of the quality of these fish, top fighting condition, full finned and absolutely stunning...

Popping up over the weekend?!? Don't forget your snow boots!

Tightlines,
Heres to a excellent weekends sport!

Thursday 10 January 2013

Thursday update jan 10th

Couple of slower days yesterday and today, no doubt caused by the torrential rain on Wednesday followed by much colder conditions. This has put the fish 'on the back foot' so to speak.

Today when I got to the fishery a few we're topping but the majority are deeper but in reach of a long leader on a floater or certainly a slow intermediate.

The prospects for the weekend are good if a little colder, so wrap up warm and bring the sinkers if you have them. If you don't have a sinking line obviously you can buy one in the shop and we will spool it up for you ready to go. If you don't want to buy one then you have 2 options:
1/ use a floater with a long leader and fish static under a bung or indicator
2/ use a sinking poly tip leader. We have two in the shop an intermediate and a fast sinker, these will in effect convert your line to an effective sink tip, allowing you to get deeper with your flies. At only £3.99 this is a very cost effective method.

Have you read Terry Phillips article in this months "Total Flyfisher"? He was fishing at Curley's for this feature and sheds some light on his, very successful fishing methods. A good read and well worth the price of the Mag.

Members photo & thoughts...

Another cracking day today!

Fish being caught all over the lake, brilliant to see all angelrs enjoying their day on the water.

Quick blog regarding a email & photo i have been sent from Member Phil Rees...

What Phil has to say about his day out...

"After about 2 hours of fishing on various lures at various speeds and various depths on 3 different pontoons using both floating and sinking lines, I had not even had a tug, so decided to try the dam wall stages.

A further half hour on lures and still no takes, but suddenly I saw a few fish rising at about the extreme of my casting range. I tried a few dries, with no luck, so decided to try a daiwl bach about 2 feet deep under an indicator. In the next hour, I caught 6 (took 2), lost 1 and missed 3 other bites. A few others followed my lead, so hopefully they caught as well.

The best was about 3lb! all fought really well."

Tightlines all, see you on the banks soon no doubt!

FIshing report from a Fly Fisher

This has been sent in by Keith Taylor who was fishing at Curley's on Sunday.
Wanted to post this email unedited,  just in case there are any cynics out there who think we are making all this stuff up!!!
BTW it was good soup!!!

hi this is Keith Taylor i spoke to you yesterday while fishing ......(you liked my soup)
you asked if i would send you the picture of the fish i had just released
well i caught a beauty right at the death (2.30pm) off the 3rd pontoon from the top wall, it gave a proper good fight, staying deep for most of the time and taking quite a while to come to the net,
i would estimate at least 5 and a half pounds (i'll take 5 though ) lovely colour and fully finned (as was the other) two great fish and even tho it was foggy i had a good session.
i know other anglers caught more but i got great pleasure from the two that i got into the net.
i did get 3 more on for a bit ,couple of splashes they got off and i lost them .
the pleasing thing also about the fish were that they came to lures i had made myself ,1st one gold head, red, yellow and green. 2nd one, heavier ,lime green, yellow and white. zonker style.
anyway you will be glad to know that both fish recovered well, and swam away at pace.
hopefully see you in july when i next get leave
thanks again

Fishing report Monday 7th

The high catch rate continues but the method is changing.
Now the newly stocked fish are becoming more naturalised in their new surroundings they are feeding naturally just like the older residents.  Consequently the methods of catching them is also changing to a more natural presentation.
The top rod today was Phil Rees with 8 fish all caught on a natural coloured Daiwl Bach and only about 2 foot deep.  Other fish came to the net with Buzzers and some braver anglers even tried their hand with Dries but not too successfully it has to be said.

Outlook
As the weather is forecast to get a little wetter this could spark off some buzzer hatches, if this happens the fish will gorge themselves on the chironomid and the catch rate could even increase!!

Amongst the numbers of fish being caught some of the older larger fish are also becoming more active. The average fish today was probably around 3lbs to 5lbs and with full fins they really put up a good battle. Some takes have been savage with more than one angler reporting being taken completely by surprise by the power and strength of these perfect specimens.

Sunday 6 January 2013

Sunday update part 2

This mornings breeze died down to a flat calm but the fog has persisted most of the day. When it did clear a little the fish came out to play more vigorously.

Top rods were to fairly regulars from Liverpool but novice fly fishers who had over 20 fish between them, others bagged anything form 3 to 7 fish each.

One of the main comments over the last 2 to 3 days were about the high quality and fighting quality of the fish we have. We pride ourselves in stocking some of the very best fish you can get and it's good that this policy is being recognised.

Another fairly big Lady Pike came out, so that was 2 for the day. One just over 20lbs and one at 19lbs. These have obviously been stirred by the new intake of trout.

A bit of rain around in the forecast next week but this shouldn't  have a detrimental effect on fishing, prospects are still very good for the foreseeable future.

Sunday update

Bit of a slow start in the fog. You can't see one end of the lake from the other. Top rod up to now is on 7 fish, lots of other being caught all around the lake, no hot spots.
I'm sure it will pick up even more if the mist clears and some light gets onto the water.

Good 20lbs + pike also caught today, following on from the 7lbs one caught by Jim McGinley on a trout lure yesterday!

Saturday 5 January 2013

Saturday update

Flat clam for most of the day and some of the new fish were still shoaled up a little. Top rod was Dave Cadman who lost count of how many fish he caught but around 18 to 20. Lots of anglers ended up with 6 to 10 fish each. Largest fish today was 5 lbs but all the fish caught are strong and fully finned!

Prospects for tomorrow are good. Lures of all colours, blogs and eggs under indicators, and towards the end of the day buzzers were also working.

Tightlines Mike

Friday update

Very enjoyable day for all anglers today.   Rod average 6.2 fish per rod.

Top rod Peter Livesley with a massive 27 fish!! Followed by Brian Winward and Jim McGinley with 16 each!
Most fish in the 1 to 2 kilo range with a few notable exceptions over 5lbs all fully finned and fighting hard.

Expect the same for the next couple of days at least till the fish settle down a little.

Report Friday 4th

Early anglers all into fish, top rod after 1 hour Jim McGinley with 9 fish!!!

Little bit breezy but mild with the fish in the top 4 ft of water.

Weekend prospects...

Prospects for the weekend….
With a stocking taking place today (click here for more info), the catch rates will soar over the next few weeks, with large catches predicted, off to a good start with one angler landing 23 trout today. In his own words “I will be back tomorrow!”

Method wise, lures will take the majority of the fish over the coming days, as the fresh stocked trout will be in an aggressive and inquisitive mood. Often chasing stripped lures, right underneath an anglers footing. Be sure to hang your flies! The natural patterns will take the larger resident trout, as they search for food.

Best Swims, are forecast to be the Road Side embankment & the east bank, pontoon 4 & 5 doing well today! See our water map HERE.

The resident fish will simply be disturbed from their normal territory, and be forced to move around and feed for the vast majority of the waking day, competing with the new stock. So keep on the move!

With warmer weather setting it, there’s even been a few hatches taking place, small midges most common currently. Although it is uncommon to see large hatches taking place this time of the year, it pays to search your surrounds, take a glance around your chosen swim. They won’t be hatching in the same numbers as the height of summer; they are still a solid food source for trout throughout the winter months.

A typical selection of flies I would give a try over the weekend….
  1. Yellow & white fritz (Brought Mr Brown, the tod rod for today!)
  2. The old favourable cats whisker
  3. Green & Black fritz’s, fished around 10ft have done well prior to the large stocking
  4. Natural imitations, such as : Cruncher, Black Buzzer, Dwial Bach etc, will do well, possibly securing anglers a few larger resident specimens!

Ps. It’s always worth a ask in the fishery office to see what fly is best producing on the day, as we all know as anglers the conditions day by day can vary, therefore so can the trout’s fly choice!

See you on the bank!
Nathan Jones

Off to a flying start!!

LARGEST STOCKING FOR OVER 3 YEARS!

The large stocking took place today and already the fish have switched on! with the top rod for today Mr Brown with 23trout! all to a yellow and white fritz!

Im sure a few of the much larger resident bows will be stirred up, and brought onto an aggressive feeding frenzy over the next few days! Get those lures tied on!

Fly fishing article

Hi All and a very Happy New Year to you all.

We have already announced our sponsorship of Terry Phillips the current International Stillwaters Champion and England rivers champion. Here he is with just a few of his trophies.

Terry will be writing a few fishing technique articles for our blog and I thought this first one would make a good New Year's read for us all.
These tactics have made Terry one of the very best fly fishers in Britain and if we put just some of it into practise then we should all become better anglers.
Enjoy!
Mike

This article couldn't be better timed given the large fish stocking due Thursday this week
