Lack of updates

Apologies for the lack of updates, as some of you will know if you have visited us lately we are unfortunately still not back into the tackle shop, although this will be sorted out this weekend.

The wintery weather is upon us with the little coarse lake freezing up a bit, the fly only lake has not been affected by the weather  no signs of freezing but the fish will obviously be a little deeper.

Take care on the pontoons if they are frosted up.

More tuition availability

I am pleased to announce the addition of another qualified Instructor to Curley's Fishery. Ian Griffin is joining me as a 'residential' instructor for the fishery. Ian has the GAIC single handed qualification and this will enable us to offer more services and even concurrent lessons in double or single handed techniques.
We also have the services of John Preston a PAA and level 2 coarse fishing coach who will be doing ad hoc work for the fishery.

Gift vouchers are available for tuition, tackle in the shop or for fishing permits from only £25.00, ring the shop on 01204 691199 or email mike@curleysfishery.co.uk

Fishery open as normal

Although the tackle shop alterations are taking longer than originally estimated, the fishery itself remains open as normal.
We still have access to all the tackle shop stock so if you visit and you need flies, leader materials or anything else just ask the bailiff and he can get it for you. Its just that is is not on show anywhere at present.
We apologies for any inconvenience.

The alterations are required to facilitate the opening of the new cafe, which is planned to be open in a few weeks time. The new building will offer much improved facilities, larger cafe and outdoor patio area, larger and more toilets incl outdoor one for anyone fishing outside of the normal cafe opening hours. So this little bit of hassle will hopefully be worth it!!

Time flies....

Its Thursday!

What a Eary start to the morning, flat calm, slowly developing into a slight westerly ripple.
The trout not showing as much as previous days, although it is a little cooler, so they have more than likely gone a little deeper. Still feeding on small roach! which can be seen first thing in the morning or later on at night, this is when they take advantage of the light conditions to hunt their prey!

Deeply fished zonkers, or large fritz's doing the killing recently, although natural patterns doing well, with Member Phil Rees hooking into quite a few fighting fit bows to dwial bachs recently....

Vary your depth, vary the patterns and find the fish, find the pattern theyre after!

A visual aid....

For Today's official blog  CLICK HERE.

It feels like ideal conditions today, could do with a little breeze, but non the less ideal conditions, warm & damp ideal for midges!! (the non biting kind)

Get those Klinkhamers tied on!

Alot of large blues chasing fry in against the embankment, especially towards the dam wall. Sinking line and a single zonker cast along the dam wall worth a go today! catch yourself a large silver blue!

Monday/Tuesday...

As Anglers can appreciate the weather was very poor yesterday (Monday), with consistent heavy rain throughout the day, finally stopping just before dark!, so not much to report!

The water remaining clear as the sediment has settled over night....

Much warmer today, with virtually nil wind currently, as you will be able to see from the video below.
Trout rising all across the lake, more so towards the dam wall, especially towards the outlet.
Over the last few weeks, as the weathers cooled, the fish have been behaving somewhat erratic, moving up and down the water column, not settling on their chosen depth. Plenty of fish being caught at different levels to confirm this, so vary your depth as the day goes on. Generally the fish have been within the top ten feet, and some very close in.

Tip of the Day!
When you approach a swim, or pontoon, before walking straight to the end and casting out towards the middle of the lake. Cast around the pontoon, or towards the bank. Some nice fry feeding fish being pulled out no more than 3-4ft from the bank!!!

Fry feeding time!! Get your small fish imitation patterns tied on!, the trout are simply going crazy for small roach at the minute.
Willing to chase any number of large patterns, as they are in a very aggressive mood!

Top patterns:
  1. Black fritz
  2. White fritz
  3. Natural Zonker
  4. Green & black tadpole
A two minute long video (not todays video upload) showing the trout feeding continously on emerging midges, keep your eyes peeled on the water above the angler to see the trout rising....

Much warmer today...

A warmer day, and with some clear sky in the distance...
Reasonable Westerly wind at the moment, blowing from the dam wall, see water map here.

I fished it myself yesterday and found that the trout were heading down, but with the slightly water temperature this morning, this appears to have brought them closer to the surface, a daddy long legs skipped across the wave should trigger a good response. If this fails a large, bright coloured booby skipped across the surface with a team of nymphs suspended below. Intermediate line just to drag the booby under the surface the last 15ft of the retrieve, often triggers a take before the "hang".

PLEASE NOTE You can attend the pike fishing weekends, with your fly rod for the usual suspects, or try to catch yourself a monster pike to the fly! Further details, here & for a full list of Rules see this link.

As regards to the fly fishing recently, the catch rates have climbed & some very good catches coming out. Member Phil Rees has had a cracking week pulling out nearly 20 fish within a few sessions, to various patterns. Still on floating line....

One of many large pike that have come out over the last few weeks! This one stands at 18lbs 9oz

Todays forecast isnt too bad, a little rain first thing but brightening up as i type this, a little on the windy side so warm clothing recommended. A sinking line can often be easier casting into the head of a wind, as it cuts throught the breeze. Presenting your flies into the wind can be deadly, especially as alot of anglers will go for comfort and sit facing away from the wind. Downwind embankment holds alot of food, as its stirred up various food sources are brought upto the surface.

Tightlines, and a short clip will be up shortly displaying the current conditions here...

  3. Black & Green tadpole
  4. Small fry patterns, i.e zonker, epoxy small fish patterns etc...

Three fully finned 3 1/2lbers have come out to the Orange Tadpole currently....

Still floating line doing well, with the trout not going much deeper than 10-12ft over the last week.

With a Very cold frosty start, with temperatures around '0' degrees, but that soon starting to climb around 10am, its now around 5degrees air temp.

Trout feeding frenzy...

The trout are in feeding mode, and have been for the last few days. The natural prior to winter feeding instinct has kicked in (as discussed in a previous post). Trout taking dries, large lures...it appears anything they can gorge on currently.

Prior to the colder months the trout gorge themselves on every available food source, doing their best to stock up as much as possible before winter. This makes fishing excellent this time of year!

Just to give you an idea of the fishing currently....

Phil Rees -  5 fish, and 5 fish yesterday to various patterns.
Gary Stanley - 4 fish taken to various patterns, on the surface and just subsurface.
Oliver Avis - 6 fish again taken to various patterns, around 10ft down.

Its vital this time of year to chop and change and vary the depth to find the fish feeding zone.

The mist has lifted...

A Misty start to the morning, but with it clearing now it has releaved ideal conditions, a slight westerly breeze, virtually a flat calm.
Fish rising towards pontoon 4 & 5 currently...

Yesterday was a good day for catches, with Young Oliver Avis coming out on top yet again, with 6 fish to his net, all taken to a white zonker. Member Phil rees also had an enjoyable few hours with 4 fish coming out to various patterns, Dwial bach and orange blob being two of them.

The occasional light shower, but general weather conditions are too bad currently.
Water proofs recommended, however as forecast the rain has started to clear up.
