Colder as promised...

Dry flies catching fish, trout gorging before the colder winter months set it....

The temperature has dropped slightly, the air temperature that is, the water has remained fairly consistent.
With a hint of frost on the surrounding folleage earlier on...

Trout have been coming out to various patterns recently, but the two flies that stand out are..

• Black Tadpole
• Black & Green fritz

Catching more fish than any other patterns currently, dont forget to have a few of these in your box!

Floating lines being used to great success, However as the temperature cools, its recommended to have a couple of sinking lines within your fishing tackle for the day, as Curleys is a deep reservoir and during the winter months you want to be down deep.

But for now! the fish are remaining near the surface, no deeper than 5-6ft at the height of the day, with the odd hatch keeping them within the top few feet of water. Well presented daddys catching a few fish yesterday....

Wednesday..

Much milder than what it has been as of recent.
A reasonable NE wind, around 7mph.

Large lures doing the killing currently, with most fish over this week coming out to either black and green tadpoles or fritz.
Fished around 4ft down, although the water temperature has dropped over this month, the fish are remaining fairly close to the surface at the minute. Floating lines still effective, until it gets a colder. Thats when the sinking lines come into their own, teamed with fritz or blobs.

Evening feed..

The trout have really woken up within the last twenty minutes, a midge feeding frenzy. [3:30pm]
Trout rising all across the east bank (see map).

Black & green fritz stripped back at pace securing a nice 21/2lb bow for one angler, whilst something a little different in the form of an orange blob taking a 3 1/2lb blue trouts fancy for another angler.

Today's top patterns - - Black & Green goldhead fritz - - Orange goldhead blob


Red bodied klinks will without doubt secure a few fish whilst this hatch is taking place...

A burst of energy...

With the School holidays in full swing, weve had alot of interest fishing the smaller coarse lake. Which is ideal for kids and adults alike, plenty of fish within this lodge.
One young angler today caught plenty of roach, rudd.
The species that exist within the small lake....

• Small roach, rudd, perch.
• Perch to 1.25lb
• Carp to 7lb
• Bream to 1.75lb

A simple tub of maggots and you cannot go wrong!
(we currently dont sell any baits).

 Excellent fun for the kids over half term, and we can arrange tackle hire for you, so no need to worry if youve got the correct tackle....

Its a great sport for them to get into, and it teaches them alot regarding taking care of nature & the environment..

A mild autumn day...

A surprisingly mild day today, a slightly north easterly breeze, making casting a little awkward off the dam wall. However the wind direction makes it ideal for right hand casters off the pontoons, the wind is prime for drifting a team of buzzers.

Update: 11:40am
A slight drizzly rain currently, but still remaining mild and fish showing across the lake.

Quick recap of the week

We've had a excellent week so far, with 89% of anglers catching between 5-10 fish, 5% catching less than 5 fish and 6% not catching. Aside from the percentages, fish have been coming out to various patterns, black fritz, suspender buzzers.

The top three patterns this week have been....
1. Black fritz
2.Black & green tadpole
3.Large black buzzer

TODAY : Saturday 20th October

Not a bad day today weather wise, a very slight easterly. A typical still autumn morning, a slight frost on the grass first thing.

A few anglers out on the water, all on various methods, some on slow sinking lines, most on floaters. It is recommended this time of year to search the water depths constantly until you find the "thermocline layer", which is the depth the fish will be most comfortable at and will remain there until they feel less comfortable or a sudden hatch takes place.
    Trout will always look up for food, and can scan the surface of the water from 5-6ft down in reasonably clear water. Although their range of vision alters the deeper they go (they can see a wider area), they cant focus as much and this can lead to snatch takes. Aggressive takes, as the fish sees your pattern from a bit further down, and will charge towards the surface, often turning away at the last minute! Very frustrating.
A Excellent way to combat these refusals, is to fish with a team of flies. So as the fish turns to head back down it may see another of your patterns that takes its fancy.

Tuesday 16th October

Howling winds and rain to follow suit, the weather is less than ideal today, please keep checking back in a hope the weather improves.

Heres a quick review/article written by Member Steve Moffat about his recent days fishing, and new techniques he learnt. Thanks for the Email!

 "Just got back from fishing at curlies, i arrived this morning 

at 10.30am afterearning some points with my wife by going some

 DIY and bribing herwith a meal out in the evening.  The weather 

was good but a little cold so i started on pontoon 5 with agreen and yellow

 fritz pulling back with a steady retrieve for tenminutes or so , too no avail . 

 As i am new to Trout fishing with this been my first year  ,i always watch 

other anglers in the hope of learning something new and i noticed the 

angler on the next pontoon had just caught his third fish , all in the space

 of half an hour. I noticed he was winding back the line on his hand 

 with an occasion pluck, i decided to have a go and at first found it hard to

 replicate but after a few casts was into my first rainbow!! I then decided to

 move to pontoon 2 , nearer to to cafe ,been my motivation, and set up again

 using the same technique  , on the first cast i hooked into a really good fish , 

but lost it , so i decided to get a coffee and sandwich in the cafe.  On returning , 

fully refreshed from an excellent sandwich, i began again and was joined by Geoff

( bailiff)and we chatted as i attempted to look and cast like i know what i am 

talking about when Bang !!! the line went ,  tight and shot off to the middle 

of the lake ripping line off my real,as soon as i managed to get some line back

 it shot off again , diving deep and burring my floating line into the depths, this  

happened five times but with the expert guidance  of Geoff  i eventually got the 

fish to the net , a two and a half pounder , i couldn't believe such a sized fish could 

put up such a fight !! ,  my arm  is still aching and the adrenaline still pumping ,

 unfortunately i had to go for  1.00pm  ,  but cannot wait to return to try out my 

new technique .

Monday 15th October

Just a quick note to say we will NOT be holding a members evening this month, the month of October.
Although we will without doubt be holding a Members evening in November 2012. So keep your eyes peeled on the blog for updates!

Today the weather is reasonable, nil wind but a slight mist like rain occasionally occurring. The temperature has risen slightly, so inevitably the rain will fall. With the temperature dipping towards late evening the trout seem to go rather deep unless a respectful hatch occurs which brings them shallower.

Dark drab patterns seem to be the way forward currently, large lures, black,olive,claret gold head fritz's doing well!

Getting to that time of year very quickly this year, the trees are losing their foliage rapidly. The trout waking up and feeding like crazy before the colder weather sets in, they stock up to last through-out the winter on little food source that is available.

Saturday 13th October

Not a bad day here, although a little on the cold side!
Nil wind, which makes a massive improvement from  yesterdays gale force winds.
The cooler weather is certainly kicking in and within the last week the trees have been shedding their leaves, leaving for a beautiful look to the fishery. See the brief video below.

Its not fishing too bad either!, Young Oliver Avis currently leading the way with 11 trout to a "black snake" which is basically a zonker strip tied onto a hook, so it wriggles and moves around like no other pattern currently available. A standard zonker has a similar action however...

Its coming to that time of year when large dark patterns work well, black fritz, black tadpole, olive fritz etc.
All these patterns are worth a dabble, especially the black tadpole as this has caught alot of fishing over the previous week.

1. Black zonker snake.
2. Black & olive tadpole

UPDATE:
Top rod  Oliver Avis with 11 trout to his net to a black snake pattern, most anglers coming away with at least 3 fish to their net, the trout seemed to have really switched on within the last 2 days due to the sudden drop in temp, almost kicking in a natural feeding instinct before winter.
